Immersion via ruthlessness, tragedy, and hard decisions
Next action: Simple blood splatter on attack (only your attacks to enemy, not vice versa). No variations. Keep it small and subtle. At some point you'll need what WoW Classic has: A reason that moves your heart to want to defend or even kill. More than a simple checklist on the quest log. This suggestion is a massive one about immersion and enjoyment of the game. From stories, to side quest chains, to one quest scenarios. But before all of that, you can start all that off with an addition to animation. Let's add something quicker to implement: blood splatter, with animation variations for each weapon type (blunt/sharp, small/big), and color variations for each mob (slimes might have different color "blood" than wolves). It would also be cool if it appeared on the ground as well, with that disappearing after 5-10 seconds. And if all players can see the blood splatter created from the attacks of all players. And turn this off in options for lower quality computers.
