Mobs go out of combat

I found a few times that attacking a mob at range (using the mage) they seemed to drop combat if they walked out of range while the fireball was heading towards them. The game shows the fireball in transit, but the mob walks away, the fireball lands, and it ignores it. It is as if a range check, done when the missile lands, fails, and combat is not entered, whereas the range check should really be done when the missile is launched, as it doesn't make sense to see a big fireball hit the mob, and it ignores it.
